Copper Solving Unit - CSU

The Copper Solving Unit is a system designed by Telmec to allow the preparation of the plating bath for unsoluble anodes using standard Copper , instead of Copper Oxide. The CSU is based on a process developed and worldwide patented by DENORA.

The unit can keep automatically a constant concentration of Copper in the bath with a plating line working continuously at 1200 Amp/hour.

The solid Copper used by the CSU doesn't have to be added with Phosphoropus as required by the traditional line with soluble anodes. It can be even waste Copper.

The Copper is placed in to a basket which is dip into the tank of the CSU. By a controlled rectifier , included in the CSU, the Copper is solved in to the electrolyte by a traditional Galvanic process. The Copper iones are caught during their migration by a patented membrane and there , they stop. A constant flow of fresh electrolyte over the membrane, take them away and bring them in to the solution then used by the plating machine.

The CSU can supply continuously Copper to the plating line at a rate of 1200 Amp/hour. But it can work also when the plating line is off , preparing the bath for the future use. This makes quite convenient the sizing of the CSU that doesn't need to match exactly the consumption of the plating line.

The advantages of the CSU are obvious for the plating lines using unsoluble anodes :

  • fully automatic unit
  • no more dirty black powder around
  • lower copper cost
  • very low maintenance

But CSU can also make very attractive its application on traditional plating line.

Traditional plating lines use soluble anodes made of Copper added with Phosphorus. The usual speed of this lines is around 2-5 ASD ( Ampere/Square Decimeter).

Transforming the traditional lines from soluble to unsoluble anodes gives the advantage of working at much higher current densities ( 5-8 ASD) , that means doubling the capacity of the line without adding any tank or requiring more floor space.

But the transformation from soluble to unsoluble anodes would force the use of Copper Oxide which is more expensive than Copper with Phosporus. The CSU not only solves this problem , but also allows the use of pure Copper which is even less expensive then Copper with Phosphorus.

Average market prices for the various Copper available are :

Type of Copper Used by Price ( Euro)
Pure Copper Oxide (99%) horizontal plating lines up to 7.00 / kg
Copper Oxide ( 78%) SL2000 2,5-3,5 / Kg
Copper + Phosphorous traditional plating lines up to 2,5 / kg
Copper CSU 1,8 / kg
